Key Volleyball Metrics: What Actually Matters

Stat tracking can overwhelm a coach. Focus on the metrics that actually correlate to winning matches at the 12-18 age level.

1. First Contact Metrics

  • Serve Receive Average: Grade passes on a 0-3 scale (3 = perfect pass, all options available; 0 = ace/error). Teams averaging 2.1+ usually have positive win percentages.
  • Serving Percentage & Ace/Error Ratio: A team should serve 90% in. However, tracking aces vs. errors gives a picture of serving aggression. A 1:1 ace-to-error ratio with aggressive serving is often acceptable.

2. Offensive Metrics

  • Hitting Efficiency (Hitting %): (Kills – Errors) / Total Attempts. At the youth level, hitting over .200 is excellent. Emphasize keeping the ball in play; reducing hitting errors is easier than generating more kills.
  • First Ball Side-Out (FBSO) %: How often does your team score immediately after receiving the opponent’s serve? This is the ultimate indicator of a healthy offense.
